The Pros and Cons of a Memory Foam Mattress

Memory foam mattresses offer comfort to users in ways that other mattresses cannot. The material sinks down when pressure is applied, "remembering" your body shape for the time you lay on it. Once you get up, the material slowly morphs back to its original shape. Its this molding that attracts people to the product; pressure points that exist where your body hits the springs of your old mattress (ankles, knees, shoulders, etc) no longer exist in foam mattresses. Where there once were pressure points the material heats up and sinks further to provide comfortable cushioning instead of pressing back against your joints. So why, then, doesn't everyone own a memory foam mattress?

Down Matress Topper

One of the main issues people complain about with foam mattresses is heat that they produce. The reason that many synthetic beds, including visco-elastic memory foam mattresses, are so hot is because they are not as breathable or absorbent as traditional mattresses. Heat can get trapped in the mattress because it is made of solid foam. Touted for its ability to contour to your body, visco-elastic memory foam can also have the adverse side effects of creating humidity and heat, actually causing you to sweat more during the night.

As a response to the complaints, scientists and designers in Germany, Italy, the United States and Israel have created synthetic fabrics to make mattresses out of that are more breathable. They've also created mattress covers that are made of a material similar to that in wicking performance fabrics used by athletes. Anti-sweat technology is only recently being used in bedding, but it is incredibly effective in regulating nighttime temperatures (a job previously given to down).
